Ojo Local Government Area is partnering Alaba Amalgamated
Traders Association, Alaba International Market, to solve the issue of security
in the market.
According to Council Manager, Fasino Kehinde, who
represented the LG Sole Administrator, Abdulwasiu Sanni, during a security
meeting organised by the association of
sectional heads (Alaba Amalgamated) in the market, the local government wants
the partnership in order to ensure peace and order in Alaba environs.
He urged the market leaders to always involve the local
government on issues of security so as to bring lasting solutions to them.
Speaking at the event, Felix Nwagu, the Chairman, General
Electrical Dealers Association (GEDA), who is also the President, Alaba
Amalgamated, said the main objective of the meeting was the security challenges
in the market.
He said, “we have a lot of security issues within the market
and there are efforts to solve them but the worrisome aspect of it is that the
perpetrators have changed tactics and this has become very challenging for us.
There is increased influx of cult members and cult-related activities and this
we enjoin the local government and security agencies within Alaba to look
into.”
Also speaking, the Chairman, Electronics Section, Alaba
International Market, Mr. Uchenna Nnadozie, said, “Alaba is having very serious
challenge as regards security. It has degenerated to armed robbery. We decided
to involve all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to it. We have been
faced with this challenge before but of recent, it has degenerated to something
deadly. Recently, someone was robbed and shot in C-Line and another person in
Electronics Section was robbed of over N400,000.”
Also, the Chairman, Industrial Section, Mr. Patrick Iwuagu,
stated that security is very important in every society. He said, “security is
very paramount in every society. Without it, there will be total disorder. We
as leaders should take it serious. Many arrests have been made earlier but were
not followed up. Before you know it, the people arrested will be bailed by
their accomplices. We have to be making meaningful arrests and follow them up
if we want this menace to stop.”
Iwuagu urged other stakeholders in the market to be security
conscious and report any threat that will endanger the market. “Here is where
we make our daily income and so, we have to make it conducive for ourselves and
our customers. Otherwise, we will put ourselves or even our customers in
serious danger, if we did not take this issue of security serious,” he said.
