The Kogi State Commissioner of police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu
made the pledge in Lokoja while receiving the new Resident Electoral
Commissioner for the state, Prof. James Apam.
Inalegwu said the state was, “ not hot as being portrayed ,
“ saying that the problem of violence before , during and after elections in
the state had been tackled by the police in collaboration with other security
agencies.
He also said that police was on top of security problem
around the ongoing continuous voters registration exercise in Dekina and
Ayangba communities.
He assured the new Resident Electoral Commissioner of the
readiness of his command to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials
and materials during the 2019 elections.
Inalegwu also promised that police will provide security for
INEC offices in all the 21 local government areas in the state to ensure safety
of staff and materials.
Earlier, the new Resident Electoral Commissioner , Prof.
Apam had told the police commission that INEC was desirous of improving the
relationship with the police to sustain and improve upon its 2015 performance.
He attributed the standards achieved in 2015 to cooperation
among all critical stakeholders , including the police , media, political
parties , politicians and others security agencies and said that this must be
sustained.
Apam said that process towards the 2019 elections had
started with the ongoing voter registration exercise, urging eligible voters to
come out and register.
