Super Eagles and Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi has withdrawn
from the squad to face Cameroon in the two legs of the crucial Russia 2018
World Cup qualifiers .<o:p></o:p></div>

It was gathered that Iwobi, who has made two appearance for
the Gunners this season, copped a thigh muscle injury in training, which will
keep him out of action for at least two weeks.<o:p></o:p></div>

To ensure that no vacuum is created, Coach Gernot Rohr has
hurriedly recalled standby CSKA Moscow player, Aaron Samuel to join the rest of
the squad in Uyo as a replacement for the injured Iwobi.<o:p></o:p></div>

Also instructed to join up with the other 23 players listed
for the Cameroon clash is Uche Agbo, who is on loan to Standard Liege from

the three-time African champions with his only goal coming against Zambia in

The last time Samuel featured for the Super Eagles was under
the late coach Stephen Keshi in 2014 in a 2-2 draw against South Africa in Uyo,

China’s crackdown on overseas investments is expected to
herald a slowdown in splurging on European clubs and impact teams where it
hurts fans the most — on the pitch.<o:p></o:p></div>

It is unlikely that supporters in Italy, Spain and England
were aware earlier this month when China’s State Council, or cabinet, moved to
restrict Chinese companies from investing in foreign sports clubs, the latest
salvo in a wider campaign by Beijing to curb capital outflows.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But fans of the dozen European clubs that are Chinese-owned
or part-owned may want to pay attention, especially if they are expecting
lavish spending on players before the transfer window closes in most of Europe
on Thursday.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I think it will have an impact on current ownership. Most
of them will have to make continued significant investment into playing staff
and all other areas of the football club in order to compete,” said Ji Zhe,
director at London-based sports marketing firm Red Lantern and an expert on
Chinese football.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“This impact could then have a knock-on effect to the clubs
as investment dries up. Chinese owners could realign their focus and the clubs
can suffer both on and off the pitch.”<o:p></o:p></div>

Chinese football has been on a roller-coaster since
President Xi Jinping declared soon after coming to power in 2012 that he wanted
to make the country a football power.<o:p></o:p></div>

Wealthy Chinese began investing in or simply buying up some
of the biggest clubs in football including Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter
Milan and Manchester City.<o:p></o:p></div>

A swathe of teams in the Midlands area of England fell under
Chinese control: former European champions Aston Villa, Premier League side
West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.<o:p></o:p></div>

In China, clubs that many football fans across the world had
never heard of began shelling out huge amounts of money to lure the likes of

“But the mood music has changed dramatically in the past
three months,” said Ji, pointing also to how Chinese clubs were reined in
during the recent domestic transfer window, which fizzled to a close last month

“The Chinese government has put a firm brake on the football

“I think current owners may ease up on adding more

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has
said that corrupt Nigerians are worse than armed robbers, also declaring that
slow judicial system occasioned by tactics of defence lawyers and interlocutory
appeals were the major obstacles militating against efforts of the commission
in the fight against corruption.</div>

Deputy Head of Ibadan Zonal office of EFCC, Mr. Kazeem Oseni
made this declaration on Sunday at the 13th Biennial Conference of Obafemi
Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Ibadan chapter
themed “Fight Against Corruption: Where are the religious leaders and
institutions?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oseni who spoke on the topic “Corruption in Nigeria: An
overview and the efforts of the EFCC in fighting the scourge” maintained that
though concerted efforts have been made to rid the country of corruption since
the establishment of the commission, the enabling and operating environment in
Nigeria are not encouraging to realize the objectives of the commission.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said, “Quite frankly, the enabling and operating
environment in Nigeria vis-a-vis anti-corruption war, has not been very
encouraging.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Issues such as legal technicalities, lack of cooperation
from some states and local governments, public attitude towards corruption, the
phenomenon of corruption mentality in Nigeria; as well as slow judicial system
occasioned by tactics of defence lawyers and interlocutory appeals, seriously
undermine the commission’s efforts in taming corruption.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oseni who however said contrary to insinuations that the
commission has not live up to its expectations, informed that the commission
was only working hard to ensure that cases are prosecuted to the logical
conclusion saying that most of the cases people may perceived as die a natural
deaths are still being investigated.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said that it will be very difficult for cases in the EFCC
to die except it is concluded.<o:p></o:p></div>

“It is very, very difficult for the EFCC case to die expect
it is concluded, if you see a case, maybe investigation is still ongoing”.<o:p></o:p></div>

Oseni while describing corruption as one of the obstacles
confronting the progress of the country which is on daily basis recorded, said
that the commission in its efforts to decongest the Lagos office and expand its
scope established the Ibadan office in order to take care of Oyo, Osun, Ondo,
Ekiti and part of Kwara states.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Now we are in Ibadan, we used to be in Lagos which is
taking care of the whole of South West, now Ibadan is taking care of Oyo, Osun,
Ondo, Ekiti and part of Kwara state. Even in Ibadan that is far from the seat
of power in Abuja, cases of corruption are recorded on daily basis. In the
academic, it encourages mediocrity over meritocrity.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Those who are corrupt are worse than armed robbers, you see
armed robbers, you can fight them but these people, you will not know that they
have collected your money. They can kill, in fact, some of them kill before they
get the money.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Since when Ibadan Zonal Office started operation, 3 Vice
Chancellors are already in EFCC, you can see that even in the academic, we want
to try as much as possible to make sure things does not go beyond that”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“However, the commission’s response to this is to enhance
the capacities of her operatives. Exposures to the requisite skills are
constantly and regularly encouraged so that our investigation can be water
tight and in conformity with the international best practices. I can say unequivocally
that our cases are diligently investigated before going to court so as to
ensure fair trail and corresponding judgment”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Socio-culturally, we engage and interface regularly with
the public through town hall meetings and use every availing platform to
discourage the get-rich-quick syndrome and flamboyant living.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“In conclusion, all hand must be on the deck to ensure we
succeed in the fight against corruption. We consider everybody a stakeholder,
as the EFCC does not have monopoly of knowledge to defeat all shade of graft.
We all have a role to play as an individual and it is when we all change our
attitude that we can see it reflected in the society. No doubt, all
stakeholders and functional institutions are crucial in the maintenance of a
high quality of moral values within the social system and the success or
failure of our fight against corruption will depend on our willingness to take
the fight through an ethical path”.<o:p></o:p></div>

The Guest Speaker, Professor Abdul-Afis Oladosu of
Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan while speaking
however declared that entrusting most spiritual and morally qualified people in
positions of authority was capable of reducing corruption to the barest minimum
in the country.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oladosu while delivering a paper titled “Combating
Corruption- Role of Religious Leaders” remarked that failure to appoint right
people in position of authority risk socio-economic and political anomie.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He informed that efforts must be made to tighten the control
of religious leaders by the politicians.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Whenever we check religion as a factor for corruption in
the world today, we are actually indulging in an odious conflation of the
spirit.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We forget factors such as ignorance of the majority of
adherence of the various religions and wrong interpretation of the religion
text by a coterie of incompetent scholars most of whom are usually
authoritarian in their approach to religious texts.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We forget factor of greed and materialism, it is the
combination of these factors that has turn places where religion could be
found.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Politicians engage in material corruption and religious
leader engage in spiritual corruption. Politicians steal from the nation purse
why religious leaders steal from God’s purse”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said that any discussion of the role of religious leaders
in combating corruption must begin with the monitoring of the attitude of any
person to be put in position of authority.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Knowledge of evil and refusal to combat it is double
punishment”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The event featured inauguration of a new executive that will

Nigerians studying at the Bowie State University, State of
Maryland, US, are exceptionally good students, some officials of the
university, have said.<o:p></o:p></div>

The officials told the correspondent of NAN that about 1,000
Nigerian students -100 international and 900 residents were studying at the
university.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Dean of Graduate School of the university, Prof. Cosmas
Nwokeafor, told NAN that Nigerians students were outstanding both in academics
and in character.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We have a very large number of Nigerian students here at
Bowie State University; most of our Nigerian students are majoring in Computer
Science and Organisational Communications and many other programmes.<o:p></o:p></div>

“And Nigerians have actually performed very well and I can
tell you because I’ve been in this university for 25 years.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“When you look at the list of performance, our students have
been stellar students in all facets of our graduate programmes as well as the

<div class="MsoNormal">
“In most areas, many of our students have completed their
degree programmes here both the undergraduate and graduate, and have advanced
in other major professional fields out there.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Their character, my goodness, if I would speak about their
character based on the ones that work very close with me, you can see the
difference.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“When you meet Nigerian students, you can tell they are
well-mannered, very humble, respectful and mindful of their business, which is
of course their education.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Among all, there might be one or two that do not actually
portray what we expect of them but a majority has actually demonstrated
excellence and that represents Nigeria very well.”<o:p></o:p></div>

Nwokeafor said that many Nigerians who had completed their
programmes in the university were medical doctors.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Some are professional nursing practitioners and educators
are out there are doing very well. A lot of our students on the undergraduate
level that come from Nigeria are really doing so well.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Robert Batten Senior Director, International Programmes at
the university also spoke highly of Nigerian students in the 150-year-old
university.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Batten said: “The first thing I know is about their work
ethic; they are tirelessly committed to excellence.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“When they are hired for on-campus jobs, they show up early,
they stay late, they ask for additional job duties; the employers on campus
love these Nigerian students.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said that he had never had a problem with any of his
Nigerian students as far as following the rules and regulations of their F-1
students’ visas was concerned.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We also have a huge number of Nigerian students who either
have permanent residence here in the United States or they have gotten their
citizenship.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“But they may have been born in Nigeria or their parents
were born in Nigeria and they (students) were born here as little children but
raised as Nigerians.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We have 1,000 of the total 5,600 we have here, the 100
being on students’ visa and the other 900 being permanent residents or citizens
of the US.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“So I’m one of the individuals that call out names at
graduation. So we get the list about two weeks ahead of time so we can start
practicing the names.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We don’t want to mispronounce anyone’s name as we say it
over the microphone. Some of the names are a little bit challenging for us U.S.
folk, so we practice.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Mrs Amina Ayodeji-Ogundiran, a Human Resource Development
Master student at the university, said “we are very family-oriented; we know
ourselves here on campus irrespective of being in different departments.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ayodeji-Ogundiran, who is President of the Graduate Students
Association and served on the Graduate Board at the university, said they were
the second largest population after the Saudi Arabian students.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“As far as performance is concerned, I have not had to worry
even in my leadership of the International Students Association for Nigerian
students.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“In my department for example, we have a very good number of
Nigerian students who are on 4.0 (CGPA) and who are doing very well
academically; I’ve not seen any situation that has been overbore.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“And talking about the way they conduct themselves morally,
we’ve not had any issue about a Nigerian student do something bad or not
conducting himself or herself well.<o:p></o:p></div>

“So I will say that it’s really been a good experience even
as I’ve served them on that association and on the Graduate Board,” she said.

Offences (Enforcement) Unit  (Task Force)
has arraigned a paramilitary officer (Man ‘O’ War) for stealing a motorcycle
impounded by the agency.<o:p></o:p></div>

The motorcycle was one of the 95 impounded by the agency
recently.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Wilson Alaba, who
represented the chairman of the agency, Mr. Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the
paramilitary officer was a member of the enforcement team that impounded
motorcycles plying restricted routes around Berger area on Wednesday, August
15, 2017.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said: “It was after we got to our office and recounted
the motorcycles that we discovered that one was missing and, after a thorough
investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Olajide Felix, a paramilitary officer
(Man ‘O’ War) attached to the agency, stole the motorcycle.”<o:p></o:p></div>

Alaba noted that the Lagos State government has been paying
huge allowances when due to members of the agency’s paramilitary officers to
cater for their needs and to equally discourage them from indulging in crime.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed
that the suspect be immediately prosecuted: “Mr. Olajide Felix, attached to the
agency since 2009, confessed in a statement he wrote after his arrest that he
stole the impounded motorcycle and that he has been using it personally.”<o:p></o:p></div>

In his statement, Felix was alleged to have confessed: “Yes,
I stole a motorcycle (Boxer Bajaj), with registration AYE 441 QC, out of 95
motorcycles impounded during enforcement operations at Berger and I was using
it for commercial purposes before I was arrested.”<o:p></o:p></div>

He, however, pleaded for leniency and promised never to
indulge in any criminality, if pardoned.<o:p></o:p></div>

North-East, is reportedly cooperating with the Military with useful information

“We led the operations to invade Gwoza, Bama, Limankara
Mobile Barrack, Bita, Bosso, Madagali, Chibok, Pulka, Firgi and Mubi.<o:p></o:p></div>

“In Madagali, which was my home town, myself, Adam Vitiri,
Abu Adam and Habu Kudama, some high ranking Boko Haram Commander led an
operation in 2014 where we killed some students and youths at the Central
Secondary School in Sabon Garin Madagali.<o:p></o:p></div>

“In one of the operations, I abducted my wife named Maryam
who had two kids for me in Sambisa forest.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“It is unfortunate that I was brainwashed and misled not
only on some abductions but in the killings of my own people that were
innocent. I wholeheartedly regret my actions.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“During a battle in Konduga where myself and other Boko
Haram commanders led the operations, I lost my right leg and almost got burnt.
Even at that, I did not stop fighting for the course. Sheikh Shekau ordered
that I should be given a tricycle which I continued to use for various
operations before I eventually surrendered,” he said.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He gave several reasons for his decision to voluntarily
surrender to the Nigerian troops after realising the misleading sermons,
barbaric indoctrination of the sect leaders and atrocities being committed in
some of the Boko Haram camps.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I willingly surrendered to the military because I was tired
of the senseless killing and fight. I realised that our people have resorted to
stealing and all sort of atrocity contrary to the teaching and practice of
Islam.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Women were being raped, sometimes publicly. Children died
from malnutrition and disease as the living condition became harsher. As there
was no food in the camp, people died every day because of hunger.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I will continue to cooperate with the security agencies in
providing useful information on our mode of operations and to disclose
top-secret hideouts of our commanders.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Meanwhile, more than 100 Boko Haram members and some
commanders have surrendered to the military in recent time.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a related development, two factions of the Boko Haram
insurgency group may be ready for talks with the Federal Government, Abdulkadir
Abubakar, former commander of the group claimed.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar, also known as Abu Muhammad, was the chief
intelligence officer of the group and one of its top commanders, until his
arrest in June by the military in Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area of
Yobe State.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at his cell
in Maiduguri that Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions were willing to dialogue
and cooperate with the government to defeat the most visible leader of the
group, Abubakar Shekau.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
According to him, Shekau, whose capture, dead or alive, the
military high command has ordered, has been the major obstacle to peace, since
the insurgency began in 2009.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Shekau is not willing to surrender due to his high
handedness. Unfortunately, the government and military authorities accorded
priority on dealing with Shekau, who is blood thirsty.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Albarnawi has indicated interest to dialogue with the
government to end insurgency and provide a lasting solution to the crisis.
Albarnawi discusses this with members of his circle. And I can assure the
government that he would cooperate to achieve peace.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The two factions are willing to cooperate with Nigerian
government to defeat Shekau,” he said.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar’s claim about the readiness of the factions to
dialogue with the Nigerian authorities could not be verified as he had been
incarcerated since June. But he insisted that the groups are predisposed to a
peaceful resolution of the eight year-old crisis.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar claimed to have undertaken various espionage
missions and provided intelligence to the insurgents, which enabled them to<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
hit a long list of targets, among which were the abduction
of 275 students at Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok and the massacre
of students at Federal Government College, Buni Yadi. Over 20 students were
murdered at Buni Yadi.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He also claimed to have been involved in other attacks on
schools in Maiduguri,  Damaturu, Postikum
and Mamudo.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The detained Boko Haram commander expressed his willingness
to give the military useful information to crush the insurgents and arrest
Shekau.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I am cooperating with the military and I am ready to
provide information on the whereabouts of Shekau. Shekau has left his enclave
in Sambisa and moved deep into Mandara Mountain. I know the area where he is
hiding and willing to provide a guide to the military.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The intensified military offensive has weakened Shekau’s
position and that of the other groups,” he added.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar revealed deep divisions and power struggle among
the insurgents, claiming the Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions were opposed to
Shekau’s leadership style and his bloodthirstiness.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He also blamed Shekau for many attacks on civilians by the
Boko Haram insurgents.<o:p></o:p></div>

“During the early days of the insurgency we fought for what
we thought was a just cause, to establish a caliphate where human beings are
valued, cherished and respected.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“After annexing vast territories, Shekau began to
demonstrate his cruelty and atrocities against humanity.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“In view of the high level atrocities committed by the
group,some of the top commanders including myself, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur
challenged Shekau, demanding an immediate end to the ugly saga.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Thereafter, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur parted ways, and
formed their groups. Shekau is responsible for suicide bombings and attack on
soft targets in the North-East.<o:p></o:p></div>

religious places of worship, markets, women and children. Our fight was
strictly with security forces. Even the kidnapped oil workers would not be

  A  suspected car snatcher, on Monday, in
Birnin-Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, was apprehended by mob while trying to
escape with bank’s customer car.<o:p></o:p></div>

It was gathered that a customer of a commercial bank in
Birnin-Kebbi had parked his car in front of bank and went inside the bank hall
to make transactions.<o:p></o:p></div>

An eyewitness, Alhaji Abubakar Zailani informed Daily Sun
that the suspect had open the door of the car with ‘master key’ and sped off.
It was also gathered that passersby’s attention wad drawn to the fleeing car
snatched because of the way and manner he drove the car out of the area. Then
some commercial operators reportedly gave him a hot chase.<o:p></o:p></div>

Zailani  disclosed
that the continued shouting of ‘barawo barawo’ attracted more people who
mobilised people and keep shouting thief and many people respondent immediately

name as ” Isah Suleiman from Samarun, Zaria, in Kaduna State.<o:p></o:p></div>

(PPRO), Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Mustapha Suleiman, confirmed the
incident.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said that the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital
due to the condition of his health and he was later discharged and the case
file and suspect was immediately transferred to from Birnin-Kebbi police
division to state Criminal Investigation Department at the police headquarters

Saturday, August 19, 2017, and in a letter dated August 21, 2017, he told the

of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I write to intimate that I have resumed
my functions as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with effect

for Abdul-Jabbar Abdulrazak, a primary two pupil of Islamiyah Pilot Science
Primary School, Bauchi Road, Jos, Plateau State, who slept one night and woke
up blind in the morning. The minor was said to have been struck by a strange
illness suspected to be occasioned by demonic attack about 1.00 am on the
ill-fated day during his sleep, barely two years after his birth in 2012.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Efforts by his poor parents to find medical help took them
from one clinic to another, before they were advised to visit the Jos
University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where he was diagnosed of a disease called
eclampsia.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After spending six months in the hospital, he was
discharged, but without regaining his sight. Later, he started suffering feats
of convulsion, during which his mouth foamed with the eyeballs popping out of
the sockets especially at night. However, his distraught parents forged ahead
in their search for a solution, this time, seeking help at the doorsteps of traditional
doctors and spiritualists. Yet, they returned home disappointed after each
attempt.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Rather than relief, the boy’s condition worsened daily, with
his parents increasingly becoming frustrated after exhausting their meager
financial resources in the elusive search for cure. Soon, his mother, Halima,
who was nursing a six-month-old baby slid into an emotional wreck, becoming
dejected and angry at the slightest provocation.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Unable to bear the agony and trauma she had been subjected
to as a result of Abdul-Jabbar’s condition, she woke up one day, packed her
belongings and moved out of her matrimonial home, abandoning the child to his
fate, and his father. That was in 2014, but reports indicated that she has
remarried.<o:p></o:p></div>

Sources said the hapless boy was left alone at home whenever
his father, Abdulrazak, went out in search of menial jobs to put food on the
table, prompting Khadija, his aged paternal grandmother, to relocate him to her

Since then, life has been a nightmare for Abdul-Jabbar, now
aged seven, even as he invests hope in God. Though resolute in his quest for
education, his greatest worry is how to get to school; more so, as Kabiru and
Dahiru, his schoolmates, who usually assisted in carrying him to school on their
backs, graduated last month.<o:p></o:p></div>

“My friends who usually carried me to school on their back
have completed their studies in my school; they are going to JSS 1 in another
school. How I will go to school in September when we will resume from the
current vacation has been my biggest problem,” he remarked recently in Hausa at
the Crest Hotel Jos, during an event where the President of the Rotary Club of
Naraguta-Jos, Theresa Oritsemajemite Eyetan, presented a wheelchair to him,
alongside seven of his classmates.<o:p></o:p></div>

That gesture, he says, has lifted his spirit and given him a
flicker of hope, and he did not mince words in expressing his joy. “Rotary Club
has given me a wheelchair to ease my movement; the challenge now is that my

grateful because I can get someone to push me to my destination. I hope to walk
and regain my sight someday, as I was not born with my present condition,” he

The death sentence passed on Aircraftman Bernard Kalu by a
military court martial has come as a soothing balm for the family of
Aircraftwoman Solape Oladupupo, which has been in agony since she was killed by
her jealous lover on March 12, this year.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On Tuesday, August 15, the General Court Martial (GCM)
sitting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Lagos, sentenced Kalu to death
by hanging for the murder of Oladupupo, who was fondly known as Shomzy.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Delivering the judgment, the President of the court, Group
Captain Elisha Bindul, found Kalu guilty of six of the eight-count charge
including murder, house breaking, impersonation, failure to perform military
duty, loss of service property and disobedience to standing orders. He
therefore sentenced him to death by hanging.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, the defence counsel expressed dissatisfaction with
the judgement, stressing that if the verdict is not reviewed by the Convening
Authority, he would approach a higher court to file an appeal.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When Sunday Sun contacted the father of the deceased, Tolani
Oladipupo, he expressed joy over the judgment, stating that the government had
given justice to his daughter.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“No appeal can hold. His (Kalu’s) defence counsel described
him as the breadwinner of the family and that he should be pardoned. My own
daughter too was the breadwinner of the family. That cannot hold any water in
the appeal. It is a court-martial and the Airforce cannot compromise their
age-long discipline,” he said.<o:p></o:p></div>

Describing the judgment as a victory, Oladipupo said it goes
a long way in relieving the pains of the family, while serving as a deterrent.
His words: “As a family, we see that the judgment is good. I was asked to sign
a form that my daughter could die in service but this was a case of someone
killing her over love issues. It is victory for us, for the Nigerian Air Force
and for Nigeria as a whole, even to all other security agencies.”<o:p></o:p></div>

On a similar note, Jolaade Oladipupo, one of the siblings of
Shomzy, posted on her Facebook wall: “God bless the Nigerian Airforce…justice
must prevail.”<o:p></o:p></div>

In a press statement reacting to the judgement, the Director
of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore
Olatokunbo Adesanya, said: “It would be recalled that ACM Kalu shot and killed
ACW Oladipupo Sholape on March 12, 2017 at the NAF Base, Makurdi. The
successful conclusion of the GCM is a validation of the NAF’s earlier assurance
to the general public that justice would be served to all concerned parties in
the matter.”<o:p></o:p></div>

Back in March, 21-year-old Kalu had fired a number of very
fatal shots at Shomzy at close range at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Makurdi,
killing her instantly. The tragic killing followed a lovers’ feud between them.
It had been reported at the time that Shomzy, who was in romantic relationship
with Kalu that had gone sour, was planning to dump him. In a feat of volcanic
rage, Kalu was said to have stormed her residence in the barracks in the
morning of the fateful day with a loaded automatic rifle issued to him for
guard duty the previous night. He pumped hot lead into her, ending the life of
the pretty aircraftwoman instantly.</div>

Rivers State Police Command yesterday, took custody of a
23-year-old man, Ifeanyichukwu Maxwell Dike, who was arrested by members of a
vigilance group in the Eliozu area in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while he was
on the way to dispose the body of his neighbour’s daughter after using other
parts of her body for ritual.<o:p></o:p></div>

Sunday Sun gathered that the suspect abducted the
eight-year-old victim, Victory Chikamso on Friday, raped, killed and removed
some parts of her body for ritual. When he was arrested by the vigilance group,
he was carrying the remains of the corpse in a bag.<o:p></o:p></div>

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer
in the state, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, told newsmen that the suspect who was residing
at Messiah Street, Eliozu, Port Harcourt was arrested by men of the Okporo

He said that Dike abducted the little girl, who lived with
her parents at the same address on Friday.<o:p></o:p></div>

“The little girl was abducted, defiled and killed, while her
vagina, eyes, tongue and breast were removed and put in a polythene bag.<o:p></o:p></div>

“The suspect was going to dispose of the body, when he was
arrested by members of a local vigilance group that suspected his movement. On
being questioned, the suspect dropped the bag and took to his heels.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Consequently, the vigilantes gave the suspect a hot chase
and apprehended him. On further interrogation by the Police, he confessed and
took the Police to where the vital organs were concealed,” Omoni said.<o:p></o:p></div>

He, however, disclosed that the body and the organs of the
victim had been recovered and deposited in the mortuary, while the suspect was
helping the Police in the investigation. <o:p></o:p></div>

In a related development, operatives from the Azikiwe Police
Station on stop-and-search duty at the Eagle Island Sandfill, on Friday,
intercepted a Toyota Avalon salon car with Reg. No. WER 767 CN  with three occupants, namely, Ignatius

Sir Bruce Forsyth has died, aged 89, his family confirmed
today. In a statement, they said he died peacefully at home surrounded by his
wife and children.<o:p></o:p></div>

Sir Bruce was loved around the country for his 75-year TV
career presenting shows including The Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right
and Strictly Come Dancing. In a statement his family said a friend had asked
where he had been for the last 18 months, to which he responded, he was ‘very
very busy, being ill’.<o:p></o:p></div>

After this, his health deteriorated and he contracted
bronchial pneumonia, his family confirmed. He received an OBE in 1998 and was
knighted in 2011. He also holds the Guinness World Record for the longest TV
career which spanned 75 years from 1939 to 2014.<o:p></o:p></div>

Tributes poured in for the veteran TV star, led by Piers
Morgan, who called him one of Britain’s ‘greatest entertainers and a lovely

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Works and Transport,
Mohammed Yahaya Wada, has revealed that Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura inherited
a huge debt burden of over N40 billion on assumption of office in 2011.   Wada, who disclosed this to newsmen in
Lafia, yesterday, said the Governor met an economically bankrupt state but has
diligently revived the economy of the state.  
He said the current administration worked hard to defray the huge debt
and financial obligations left behind by the Dr Aliyu Akwe Doma administration.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
  Wada said: “This
government inherited over N40 billion debt excluding internal debts. The Works
Ministry alone had over N5 billion debt but the Almakura government settled it.
This government has also settled all debts it incurred; there is no outstanding
debt from anywhere.   “It is also the
Governor’s plan not to borrow any money that would place heavy burden on the
next government. He keeps telling us that he will not want the next governor to
suffer what he suffered.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
  He debunked
insinuations in some quarters that some projects in the state would be
abandoned, stressing that all projects embarked upon by the present government
would be completed.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
  Wada said the
Governor was committed and determined to complete all ongoing projects,
including the N20 billion Lafia cargo airport, before the expiration of his
tenure in 2019.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
  The Commissioner
explained that the three factors that determine the completion of projects at
specified time were natural disaster, which includes rainfall, capacity of the
contractor and availability of funds. He noted that despite frequent rainfalls,
which halted all ongoing major projects in the state, the projects were designed
to be completed within the lifespan of the administration.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
  Wada disclosed that
since the inception of the administration, about 1400 kilometers of roads have
been constructed in the state comprising of 800 kilometers of rural roads, 300
kilometers of intercity roads and 300 kilometers of township roads with 200
culverts across the state.<o:p></o:p></div>

While explaining that government is a continuum, Wada said
the administration inherited the Adudu-Azara road and Akyaragu-Doma road, among
others, with huge financial involvement but no tangible work on ground, adding

The Acting President commended Kagame who has shown
excellent leadership, particularly in the East African region, noting that his

credibility of graduates produced by universities in the country and called for

parents, saying government and ASUU should find permanent solution to the

“The 2009 ASUU/FG agreement was signed under my tenure as
the minister of education.<o:p></o:p></div>

“We signed the agreement because we believed its
implementation will help improve the standard and quality of university
education in the country.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“What I am saying is that the present administration should
show considerable goodwill in commencing the implementation of the agreement,’’
he said.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Egwu said that in spite of the current recession, the
federal government should show considerable commitment toward implementing the
2013 Memorandum of Understanding entered with ASUU.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The country is facing some difficult economic challenges in
view of the current recession.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“However, it should equally consider the conditions of the
lecturers, fate of the Nigerian universities and the students.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Let the government start from somewhere; it may not
implement 100 per cent of the agreement at once, but it must show considerable
commitment.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“ASUU on its part should show patriotism and stop adopting
strike action as the last option for pushing forward its demand.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The two parties must reach a compromise anchored on
constructive dialogue and engagement to steer through and permanently end the
incessant universities strike in Nigeria.’’<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The former minister called for prayers for the quick
recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari and also prayed for the peace and
sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
ASUU declared an indefinite strike over unresolved and
contentious issues with the federal government, on Sunday, August 13.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The union had earlier gone on a six months strike between
July and December 2013 but suspended it after the government signed a MoU with
it.<o:p></o:p></div>

ASUU claimed that only N200 billion out of a total of N1.3
trillion of the Public Universities Revitalisation (Needs Assessment) fund was
released as part of the agreement as at November 2016 when it went into a
one-week warning strike.</div>

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo will join other world leaders
to witness the inauguration of President Paul Kagame of Rwanda in the country’s
capital, Kigali on Friday, August 18.<o:p></o:p></div>

This was contained in a statement issued by the Special
Adviser to the Acting President on Media and Publicity,  Laolu Akande .<o:p></o:p></div>

Akande noted that the Acting President would return to the
country immediately after the inauguration.<o:p></o:p></div>

The statement reads: “Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN,

My mentoring moment came in the form of an unexpected
breakup. It was just before Christmas and I was meant to fly to London to
celebrate the holiday with his family when I suddenly found myself with plane
tickets that I no longer had use for. That close to Christmas, my options were
limited. Then I started thinking about all this other stuff I had that I no
longer wanted: a necklace, artwork we bought together and concert tickets for
shows coming up in the new year. It was all still great stuff, I just didn’t
want it around anymore.<o:p></o:p></div>

I started joking with my friends about a website that would
let you offload all your breakup baggage so you could make some cash to buy
something that would make you feel fabulous again. Everyone laughed and then
shared stories of their own—one friend had a Turkish rug she bought on holiday
and now didn’t know what do with it and another had a box of jewelry from an ex
under her bed that her current fiancée didn’t know about. It seemed breakup
collateral was a real problem. Soon after my breakup, my older sister swooped
in to cheer me up and brought me the book Why Men Marry Bitches. This led to
another aha moment—I was surprised that this was the story we women chose to
tell each other.  Surely we can do better
than this?<o:p></o:p></div>

I’d been working as an innovation consultant for about ten
years and decided to look into the “breakup space.” It seems sordid, but stay
with me. Not only was the space completely empty (surprising when online dating
is saturated and has $2 billion in annual revenues), it was really jaded. There
were two stereotypes happening 1) sit on the sofa in pajamas while watching
Bridget Jones and sobbing into a pint of Ben & Jerry’s or 2) unleash your
inner crazy and key your ex’s sports car. It felt out of touch, depressing and
so far removed from the modern women.<o:p></o:p></div>

My first-hand experience, my friends’ experiences and my
research gave me the confidence to forge ahead and launch Never Liked It
Anyway—it’s positive, cheeky and all about moving forward, not moping about.

Don’t Go It Alone. It’s easy to want to hide and shut
yourself off to the world, but this makes you much more likely to fall into
negative spirals. Let your friends help— that’s what they’re there for and you’d
do the same for them!<o:p></o:p></div>

Banish All Traces. You don’t have to sell or toss reminders
of your ex just yet, but make sure they are out of sight. This includes any
triggers like music or movies that make you think of that person. Pop them in a
shoebox and hide them until you’re ready to really let go.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Lighten Up. Laughter really is the best medicine. Find ways
to let laughter in. Make time for comedy nights, improv evenings and your
funniest friends.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Try New Things. Break old habits and form new ones. Take up
new activities, hobbies and adventures that have no associations with your ex.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Splurge A Little. You don’t have to completely blow the
bank, but treat yourself to something fabulous that sends a signal to yourself
that you love and respect yourself. Your confidence will radiate to others and
they’ll treat you accordingly. Red lipstick is always a good idea—it’s the
ultimate, instant confidence booster.<o:p></o:p></div>

Get Creative. Unleash your imagination and let those
emotions fly: paint, write a song, sing and sketch. Whatever you choose, don’t

building your physical strength—it’s often easier to build it from the outside
