China’s crackdown on overseas investments is expected to
herald a slowdown in splurging on European clubs and impact teams where it
hurts fans the most — on the pitch.<o:p></o:p></div>

It is unlikely that supporters in Italy, Spain and England
were aware earlier this month when China’s State Council, or cabinet, moved to
restrict Chinese companies from investing in foreign sports clubs, the latest
salvo in a wider campaign by Beijing to curb capital outflows.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But fans of the dozen European clubs that are Chinese-owned
or part-owned may want to pay attention, especially if they are expecting
lavish spending on players before the transfer window closes in most of Europe
on Thursday.<o:p></o:p></div>

“I think it will have an impact on current ownership. Most
of them will have to make continued significant investment into playing staff
and all other areas of the football club in order to compete,” said Ji Zhe,
director at London-based sports marketing firm Red Lantern and an expert on

“This impact could then have a knock-on effect to the clubs
as investment dries up. Chinese owners could realign their focus and the clubs

Chinese football has been on a roller-coaster since
President Xi Jinping declared soon after coming to power in 2012 that he wanted
to make the country a football power.<o:p></o:p></div>

Wealthy Chinese began investing in or simply buying up some
of the biggest clubs in football including Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter
Milan and Manchester City.<o:p></o:p></div>

A swathe of teams in the Midlands area of England fell under
Chinese control: former European champions Aston Villa, Premier League side
West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.<o:p></o:p></div>

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has
said that corrupt Nigerians are worse than armed robbers, also declaring that
slow judicial system occasioned by tactics of defence lawyers and interlocutory
appeals were the major obstacles militating against efforts of the commission
in the fight against corruption.</div>

Deputy Head of Ibadan Zonal office of EFCC, Mr. Kazeem Oseni
made this declaration on Sunday at the 13th Biennial Conference of Obafemi
Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Ibadan chapter
themed “Fight Against Corruption: Where are the religious leaders and
institutions?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oseni who spoke on the topic “Corruption in Nigeria: An
overview and the efforts of the EFCC in fighting the scourge” maintained that
though concerted efforts have been made to rid the country of corruption since
the establishment of the commission, the enabling and operating environment in
Nigeria are not encouraging to realize the objectives of the commission.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said, “Quite frankly, the enabling and operating
environment in Nigeria vis-a-vis anti-corruption war, has not been very
encouraging.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Issues such as legal technicalities, lack of cooperation
from some states and local governments, public attitude towards corruption, the
phenomenon of corruption mentality in Nigeria; as well as slow judicial system
occasioned by tactics of defence lawyers and interlocutory appeals, seriously
undermine the commission’s efforts in taming corruption.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oseni who however said contrary to insinuations that the
commission has not live up to its expectations, informed that the commission
was only working hard to ensure that cases are prosecuted to the logical
conclusion saying that most of the cases people may perceived as die a natural
deaths are still being investigated.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He said that it will be very difficult for cases in the EFCC
to die except it is concluded.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“It is very, very difficult for the EFCC case to die expect
it is concluded, if you see a case, maybe investigation is still ongoing”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oseni while describing corruption as one of the obstacles
confronting the progress of the country which is on daily basis recorded, said
that the commission in its efforts to decongest the Lagos office and expand its
scope established the Ibadan office in order to take care of Oyo, Osun, Ondo,
Ekiti and part of Kwara states.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Now we are in Ibadan, we used to be in Lagos which is
taking care of the whole of South West, now Ibadan is taking care of Oyo, Osun,
Ondo, Ekiti and part of Kwara state. Even in Ibadan that is far from the seat
of power in Abuja, cases of corruption are recorded on daily basis. In the
academic, it encourages mediocrity over meritocrity.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Those who are corrupt are worse than armed robbers, you see
armed robbers, you can fight them but these people, you will not know that they
have collected your money. They can kill, in fact, some of them kill before they
get the money.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Since when Ibadan Zonal Office started operation, 3 Vice
Chancellors are already in EFCC, you can see that even in the academic, we want
to try as much as possible to make sure things does not go beyond that”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“However, the commission’s response to this is to enhance
the capacities of her operatives. Exposures to the requisite skills are
constantly and regularly encouraged so that our investigation can be water
tight and in conformity with the international best practices. I can say unequivocally
that our cases are diligently investigated before going to court so as to
ensure fair trail and corresponding judgment”.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Socio-culturally, we engage and interface regularly with
the public through town hall meetings and use every availing platform to
discourage the get-rich-quick syndrome and flamboyant living.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“In conclusion, all hand must be on the deck to ensure we
succeed in the fight against corruption. We consider everybody a stakeholder,
as the EFCC does not have monopoly of knowledge to defeat all shade of graft.
We all have a role to play as an individual and it is when we all change our
attitude that we can see it reflected in the society. No doubt, all
stakeholders and functional institutions are crucial in the maintenance of a
high quality of moral values within the social system and the success or
failure of our fight against corruption will depend on our willingness to take
the fight through an ethical path”.<o:p></o:p></div>

The Guest Speaker, Professor Abdul-Afis Oladosu of
Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan while speaking
however declared that entrusting most spiritual and morally qualified people in
positions of authority was capable of reducing corruption to the barest minimum
in the country.<o:p></o:p></div>

Oladosu while delivering a paper titled “Combating
Corruption- Role of Religious Leaders” remarked that failure to appoint right
people in position of authority risk socio-economic and political anomie.<o:p></o:p></div>

He informed that efforts must be made to tighten the control
of religious leaders by the politicians.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Whenever we check religion as a factor for corruption in
the world today, we are actually indulging in an odious conflation of the
spirit.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“We forget factors such as ignorance of the majority of
adherence of the various religions and wrong interpretation of the religion
text by a coterie of incompetent scholars most of whom are usually
authoritarian in their approach to religious texts.<o:p></o:p></div>

“We forget factor of greed and materialism, it is the
combination of these factors that has turn places where religion could be
found.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Politicians engage in material corruption and religious
leader engage in spiritual corruption. Politicians steal from the nation purse

Maryland, US, are exceptionally good students, some officials of the

The officials told the correspondent of NAN that about 1,000
Nigerian students -100 international and 900 residents were studying at the

Dean of Graduate School of the university, Prof. Cosmas

Batten said: “The first thing I know is about their work

“When they are hired for on-campus jobs, they show up early,
they stay late, they ask for additional job duties; the employers on campus
love these Nigerian students.”<o:p></o:p></div>

He said that he had never had a problem with any of his
Nigerian students as far as following the rules and regulations of their F-1
students’ visas was concerned.<o:p></o:p></div>

“We also have a huge number of Nigerian students who either

Association and served on the Graduate Board at the university, said they were

even in my leadership of the International Students Association for Nigerian

“In my department for example, we have a very good number of

academically; I’ve not seen any situation that has been overbore.<o:p></o:p></div>

we’ve not had any issue about a Nigerian student do something bad or not

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special
Offences (Enforcement) Unit  (Task Force)
has arraigned a paramilitary officer (Man ‘O’ War) for stealing a motorcycle
impounded by the agency.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The motorcycle was one of the 95 impounded by the agency
recently.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Wilson Alaba, who
represented the chairman of the agency, Mr. Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the
paramilitary officer was a member of the enforcement team that impounded
motorcycles plying restricted routes around Berger area on Wednesday, August
15, 2017.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said: “It was after we got to our office and recounted
the motorcycles that we discovered that one was missing and, after a thorough
investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Olajide Felix, a paramilitary officer
(Man ‘O’ War) attached to the agency, stole the motorcycle.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Alaba noted that the Lagos State government has been paying
huge allowances when due to members of the agency’s paramilitary officers to
cater for their needs and to equally discourage them from indulging in crime.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed
that the suspect be immediately prosecuted: “Mr. Olajide Felix, attached to the
agency since 2009, confessed in a statement he wrote after his arrest that he
stole the impounded motorcycle and that he has been using it personally.”<o:p></o:p></div>

In his statement, Felix was alleged to have confessed: “Yes,
I stole a motorcycle (Boxer Bajaj), with registration AYE 441 QC, out of 95
motorcycles impounded during enforcement operations at Berger and I was using
it for commercial purposes before I was arrested.”<o:p></o:p></div>

He, however, pleaded for leniency and promised never to
indulge in any criminality, if pardoned.<o:p></o:p></div>

Meanwhile, Magistrate Lateef Owolabi of the Lagos State
Mobile Court at Oshodi granted the accused bail after he pleaded guilty to the
one-count charged of conduct in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by

and destruction of properties across the length and breadth of the North-east.<o:p></o:p></div>

The ex-terrrorist kingpin who is being held in a military
facility for the repentant and surrendered Boko Haram members in the
North-East, is reportedly cooperating with the Military with useful information
on locations and hideouts of other top Commanders of the Islamist sect.<o:p></o:p></div>

“Myself and Abu Hafsat a Boko Haram commander led other
squads to abduct the Chibok girls.<o:p></o:p></div>

“We led the operations to invade Gwoza, Bama, Limankara

“In Madagali, which was my home town, myself, Adam Vitiri,
Abu Adam and Habu Kudama, some high ranking Boko Haram Commander led an
operation in 2014 where we killed some students and youths at the Central
Secondary School in Sabon Garin Madagali.<o:p></o:p></div>

“In one of the operations, I abducted my wife named Maryam
who had two kids for me in Sambisa forest.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“It is unfortunate that I was brainwashed and misled not
only on some abductions but in the killings of my own people that were
innocent. I wholeheartedly regret my actions.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“During a battle in Konduga where myself and other Boko
Haram commanders led the operations, I lost my right leg and almost got burnt.
Even at that, I did not stop fighting for the course. Sheikh Shekau ordered
that I should be given a tricycle which I continued to use for various
operations before I eventually surrendered,” he said.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He gave several reasons for his decision to voluntarily
surrender to the Nigerian troops after realising the misleading sermons,
barbaric indoctrination of the sect leaders and atrocities being committed in
some of the Boko Haram camps.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I willingly surrendered to the military because I was tired
of the senseless killing and fight. I realised that our people have resorted to
stealing and all sort of atrocity contrary to the teaching and practice of
Islam.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Women were being raped, sometimes publicly. Children died
from malnutrition and disease as the living condition became harsher. As there
was no food in the camp, people died every day because of hunger.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I will continue to cooperate with the security agencies in
providing useful information on our mode of operations and to disclose
top-secret hideouts of our commanders.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Meanwhile, more than 100 Boko Haram members and some
commanders have surrendered to the military in recent time.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a related development, two factions of the Boko Haram
insurgency group may be ready for talks with the Federal Government, Abdulkadir
Abubakar, former commander of the group claimed.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar, also known as Abu Muhammad, was the chief
intelligence officer of the group and one of its top commanders, until his
arrest in June by the military in Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area of
Yobe State.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at his cell
in Maiduguri that Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions were willing to dialogue
and cooperate with the government to defeat the most visible leader of the
group, Abubakar Shekau.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
According to him, Shekau, whose capture, dead or alive, the
military high command has ordered, has been the major obstacle to peace, since
the insurgency began in 2009.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Shekau is not willing to surrender due to his high
handedness. Unfortunately, the government and military authorities accorded
priority on dealing with Shekau, who is blood thirsty.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Albarnawi has indicated interest to dialogue with the
government to end insurgency and provide a lasting solution to the crisis.
Albarnawi discusses this with members of his circle. And I can assure the
government that he would cooperate to achieve peace.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The two factions are willing to cooperate with Nigerian
government to defeat Shekau,” he said.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar’s claim about the readiness of the factions to
dialogue with the Nigerian authorities could not be verified as he had been
incarcerated since June. But he insisted that the groups are predisposed to a
peaceful resolution of the eight year-old crisis.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar claimed to have undertaken various espionage
missions and provided intelligence to the insurgents, which enabled them to<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
hit a long list of targets, among which were the abduction
of 275 students at Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok and the massacre
of students at Federal Government College, Buni Yadi. Over 20 students were
murdered at Buni Yadi.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He also claimed to have been involved in other attacks on
schools in Maiduguri,  Damaturu, Postikum
and Mamudo.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The detained Boko Haram commander expressed his willingness
to give the military useful information to crush the insurgents and arrest
Shekau.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I am cooperating with the military and I am ready to
provide information on the whereabouts of Shekau. Shekau has left his enclave
in Sambisa and moved deep into Mandara Mountain. I know the area where he is
hiding and willing to provide a guide to the military.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The intensified military offensive has weakened Shekau’s
position and that of the other groups,” he added.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Abubakar revealed deep divisions and power struggle among
the insurgents, claiming the Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions were opposed to
Shekau’s leadership style and his bloodthirstiness.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He also blamed Shekau for many attacks on civilians by the
Boko Haram insurgents.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“During the early days of the insurgency we fought for what
we thought was a just cause, to establish a caliphate where human beings are
valued, cherished and respected.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“After annexing vast territories, Shekau began to
demonstrate his cruelty and atrocities against humanity.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“In view of the high level atrocities committed by the
group,some of the top commanders including myself, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur
challenged Shekau, demanding an immediate end to the ugly saga.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Thereafter, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur parted ways, and
formed their groups. Shekau is responsible for suicide bombings and attack on
soft targets in the North-East.<o:p></o:p></div>

“The Albarnawi and Mamman Nur groups never attacked schools,
religious places of worship, markets, women and children. Our fight was
strictly with security forces. Even the kidnapped oil workers would not be

(APC) was working hard to ensure that it captures power in Abia in 2019. This

Akomas, who spoke in Umuahia after he received the
“Distinguished Manager” award from the Nigeria Institute of Management

for the institute and the society at large, stressing that it was his desire

  A  suspected car snatcher, on Monday, in
Birnin-Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, was apprehended by mob while trying to
escape with bank’s customer car.<o:p></o:p></div>

It was gathered that a customer of a commercial bank in
Birnin-Kebbi had parked his car in front of bank and went inside the bank hall
to make transactions.<o:p></o:p></div>

An eyewitness, Alhaji Abubakar Zailani informed Daily Sun
that the suspect had open the door of the car with ‘master key’ and sped off.
It was also gathered that passersby’s attention wad drawn to the fleeing car
snatched because of the way and manner he drove the car out of the area. Then
some commercial operators reportedly gave him a hot chase.<o:p></o:p></div>

Zailani  disclosed
that the continued shouting of ‘barawo barawo’ attracted more people who
mobilised people and keep shouting thief and many people respondent immediately

He said, the suspect was eventually apprehended  within Birnin-Kebbi and arrested by the

name as ” Isah Suleiman from Samarun, Zaria, in Kaduna State.<o:p></o:p></div>

When contacted on phone, Police Public Relation Officer
(PPRO), Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Mustapha Suleiman, confirmed the
incident.<o:p></o:p></div>

He said that the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital
due to the condition of his health and he was later discharged and the case
file and suspect was immediately transferred to from Birnin-Kebbi police
division to state Criminal Investigation Department at the police headquarters

Suleiman added that the car snatcher mentioned one of his
accomplished whom they come from Zaria to together whom he name as Alhaji Bala
